W2SB Challenge #1: My Favorite Things

Welcome to W2SB!

Bobbi and I are thrilled to unveil a new blog for a new card making challenge on this first day of a new year!

The Inspiration Behind W2SB

Can we talk for a minute about New Year's resolutions? I can't count the number of years I've resolved to lose those extra 5 pounds... year after year after year. Then came last year's AHA moment -- the moment I resolved to add more joy to my life by spending more time doing things I love with my favorite people.

This year, I wanted to add a little bit more joy. One of my favorite things is making cards with friends. Turns out my friend Bobbi shares the same passion. And, after a couple of e-mails and one fairly lengthy phone call, Words 2 Scrap By was born!

Using Words to Inspire Creativity

Each monthly challenge will be to make a card inspired by words. Inspiration might come in the form of an inspirational quote, a poem, a well-known saying, a famous movie line, a song lyric... Well, you get the idea.

W2SB Challenge #1

So, what's the inspiration for the first challenge? Our first month's inspiration comes in the form of the song "My Favorite Things" from Rodger and Hammerstein's  The Sound of Music. You know the song, "Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens..."

The challenge is to choose a lyric from the movie and make a card based on your chosen lyric. Maybe your card will feature roses and raindrops... or kittens with whiskers... or another one of those favorite things mentioned in the song.

The Prize Package

Each month, a winning card will be chosen based on its interpretation of the challenge theme, creativity, craftsmanship, and overall look. The prize package includes:
  • receiving a card-making-related prize,
  • being a guest I-Teamer for a future challenge, and
  • receiving a W2SB badge made by our very own uber-talented Peggy.

This Month's Prize

Paper Smooches is one of my absolute favorite paper crafting companies. Their stamps and coordinating dies are AMAZING -- with adorable images and such clever sentiments.
We are quite excited to announce that Paper Smooches is the sponsor for this debut challenge. This month's challenge winner will receive the stamp set of their choice from Paper Smooches. Entry guidelines are listed on our Rules of the Road page.
Thanks so much, Kim, for your support of our debut challenge.

This Month's Sample Cards

The cards below were made by our founding Inspiration Team: Bernadette, Mary Anne, Penny, Bobbi, and me. In addition, we are thrilled to have Sandy Allnock, Founder and Executive Director of Operation Write Home, as our first guest I-Teamer. Thanks so much, Sandy, for joining us in our first challenge!

Bernadette
Don't you just love the colors that Bernadette used -- and
how she used black to call out her key elements?
The adorned snowflake at the top of the page really is snow fun.
Speaking of fun, I can almost see the snowflakes melting on her kids noses and eyelashes.
Bobbi
Bobbi says the raindrops lyric always reminds her of baby and wedding showers.
This adorable card is for an upcoming baby shower.
She used a textured plate to get the raindrops in the background, adding a few epoxy raindrops.

Love all the layers, dimensions, and textures in this sweet little card!

Mary Anne
I simply love the bow connecting the two mittens.
And, would you believe that the cuffs of the mittens is washi tape?!
Mary Anne doesn't have a blog.
So, feel free to leave her some love in the comment section.
Penny
Don't you just love how Penny made the song lyric her own?
And, her whimsical ribbon treatment is the perfect tie for this yummy package

Sandy Allnock FavoriteThings Kitty
Sandy
Sandy's cards are always among our favorite things... and this one is no exception!
Love the way she's combined  these polka dot papers and then used lighter colors
to bring all the attention on her little kitty Punch and the card's sentiment!

Lastly, My Card
The inspiration for my card was all of my hubby's  plants
that reside in our house from October to May.... and the hours
I spend waiting for winter to turn to spring!

So, now it's you turn. Which lyric from this classic song speaks to you?

Thanks for joining us for this month's challenge!
